About Give Me A Break
Give Me A Break Childcare is a new licensed centre opening late fall 2026 at 976 Stone Church Rd E on Hamilton Mountain. We offer full-time, part-time and on-demand care for children 18 months to 6 years, with hours that run into the evening and across the weekend, so families with real-life schedules have somewhere to turn.
Our program is grounded in Ontario's How Does Learning Happen? and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, and it is led by our founder, Jacqueline Barnett, RECE, who brings more than 35 years of working with children. You would be joining the founding team, helping shape the rooms, the routines and the culture from day one.
The role
We are hiring RECEs for our toddler room (18 months to 2.5 years) and our preschool room (2.5 to 4 years), on full-time and part-time schedules. You will build the room from an empty, freshly renovated space: the environment, the routines, the relationships with families. Because we are small, your voice carries. Because we are new, there is no "how it has always been done".
The part-time position works differently and suits someone who wants that. Rather than holding one room, it provides qualified coverage where the centre needs it: planned relief, short-notice absences, and the evening and weekend on-demand groups, across toddler, preschool and kindergarten-age children. If you are building a schedule around school, family or another job, ask about this one.
What you will do
- Plan and lead inclusive, play- and inquiry-based experiences that follow children's interests, strengths, cultures and languages
- Observe and document children's learning, and use what you see to shape the environment and the materials
- Keep children safe through active supervision, ratio awareness and consistent health and sanitation routines
- Support personal care, meals and rest in a way that protects every child's dignity and builds their independence
- Administer authorized medication and follow individualized and anaphylaxis plans exactly as written
- Build warm, responsive relationships with children, and partner openly with their families
- Keep accurate attendance, daily, medication and incident records
- In the part-time position, provide qualified coverage across rooms and age groups, and keep supervision, ratio and safety standards constant through hand-offs
- With training, take on Supervisor Designate responsibilities when the Supervisor is off site, if you want to grow in that direction
What you bring
- Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education from a recognized institution
- Registered Early Childhood Educator in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators
- Working knowledge of the CCEYA, O. Reg. 137/15 and How Does Learning Happen?
- Current Standard First Aid with infant and child CPR from a WSIB-approved provider
- Availability for the schedule above, including occasional evenings or weekends
Nice to have
- Experience in licensed toddler or preschool rooms
- Experience with pedagogical documentation or Reggio-inspired practice
- Supply or float experience, for the part-time position
- Interest in leadership, including the Supervisor Designate role
Conditions of employment
- A Vulnerable Sector Check completed before your start date, with ongoing offence declarations as required under the Child Care and Early Years Act
- Health and immunization documentation as required by Hamilton Public Health
- Completion of GMAB's orientation, including our policies, program statement, allergy and anaphylaxis procedures and emergency plans
What we offer
- A founding-team role in a brand-new, fully renovated centre
- A small team with direct access to the founder and the Supervisor
- Shifts across days, evenings and weekends, so you can build a schedule that fits your life
- Support for your professional learning, including College of Early Childhood Educators CPL requirements where they apply
Start dates are set with each successful candidate ahead of our late fall 2026 opening. The Supervisor starts first and helps build the rest of the team.
