We are building a licensed childcare centre at 976 Stone Church Rd E in Hamilton. This page is where we post what has actually happened on site, so families on our waitlist can follow along rather than wonder.

Stripped back, and the floor going down

The inside of 976 Stone Church Rd E is down to the studs, which is the point at which a renovation stops looking like a house and starts looking like a plan. With the old walls out you can finally read the two program rooms at full size, and new subfloor is going down over the original boards.

  • Interior taken back to the studs across the main floor
  • New steel posts and a beam in the basement, carrying the floor above
  • Subfloor being laid over the original boards
  • New insulation going in, for warmth through the winter and cool through the summer
  • Ground opened up outside, for the service line out to the City connection
  • Window openings exposed, so the daylight in each room can be measured rather than guessed

Before we started

Before any of the work above, this is where we began: a solid building on a treed lot on Stone Church Rd E, bought for what it could become rather than for what it already was. Most of this stage happened on paper, working out how two program rooms would sit inside the space and what the City would need from us.

  • Permit and approvals process opened with the City
  • Replacing the service line from the building out to the City connection identified as the item that sets the schedule

The space

Two licensed program rooms, sized to the age groups we serve.

Toddler Room

Approximately 18 months to 2.5 years

Its own washroom, a change table and an elevated play space. Set up for children who are still finding their feet.

Preschool Room

Approximately 2.5 to 6 years

The largest space in the building, with its own washroom and an elevated play space. Room to build, spread out and work on longer projects.

Floor plan of the Give Me A Break centre The main entrance is at the north-west corner and opens into an entry, which steps down into the preschool room. The staff washroom sits off the entry on the west wall, with its own door into the preschool room. The preschool room wraps the west and south of the building and holds an elevated play space along the west wall. A central block divides the two program rooms: the preschool washroom opens into the preschool room, the smaller toddler washroom opens into the toddler room, and a small food prep area with a food lift sits just south of them. The toddler room occupies the east side, runs further south than the preschool room, and has its own elevated play space in the north-east corner. A door connects the preschool room directly to the toddler room, and a second door leads from the toddler room to the stairs down along the far east wall.
